Structure at Tests & Tips

The menu structure is very clear, but this is to be expected when using a Web Content Management System (WCMS).
I have developed an own fixed menu structure for my test reports.

New: German Web Pages now in Subfolder /de/

Since 19.11.2020 you find my German pages in the subfolder /en/ – this makes it easier for all those who have always found English pages under /en/ and therefore expect German pages under /de/ – because this is what the big companies have been known for years.
There are several reasons why not every web designer has the same approach, some of them software-related. Some WCMS is very up-to-date, but its development may have started before globalisation. Such an extra folder with the two-digit language abbreviation according to ISO standards is only intended for additional languages. The main language does not get an extra folder. That was perhaps once okay, but today it confuses visitors and search engines more. I see it daily in the logbook that there are unnecessary failed attempts. That's why I've worked hard on this and solved the problem with a workaround.

Meaningful Web Addresses («Clean URL»)

As a visitor of my website you usually use the menu or just browse through. You do not need to think about the page names/web addresses. But I know this from my own experience: suddenly you find an interesting page for which you want to bookmark not only in your own browser. You want to share this page with others and not forget it right away. My web pages are easy to remember, because they are clearly named.

For technical reasons, the URL contains a question mark after the slash behind the domain, but otherwise already accords to a «Clean URL».
So this page here has the web address https://tests-and-tips.info/en/?about/website/structure (usually you leave out filler words and write in lower case only).

Web Addresses in lower case only

24.06.2020: In the afternoon the website was changed to completely lower case URLs. Special characters and umlauts have always been stored as generally understandable ASCII characters. Now this URL character replacement ensures that all web addresses are stored uniformly in lower case.

Conversion with side Effects

The conversion took only two minutes, but the post-processing of thousands of older manually set links took two weeks. Thanks to the use of a good editor I was able to save a lot of time by using «Search & Replace», but still had to proceed very carefully.

In the normal text and in the menus the names are written in the usual correct spelling as you would expect.
Only there, where it is really relevant and everybody knows and expects it, the text is converted appropriately: for the web address (URL).

Main Menu senseful purified: Computer and Mobile Phone etc. are Submenus of Hardware

Please first select Hardware on my homepage. Only then select Computer, Mobile Phone or Mobile Phone Accessories.
Thanks to the pull-down menu, this can be done quickly in one go using mouse or touchpad. If you don't like pop-up menus, you can also click on menu after menu.

Therefore you can never find this information directly under Hardware!

  • Submenu for Computer devices: tests-and-tips.info/en/?hardware/computer/…
  • Submenu for Mobile Phone devices: tests‑and‑tips.info/en/?hardware/mobile-phone/…
  • Submenu for Mobile Phone Accessories: tests‑and‑tips.info/en/?hardware/mobile-phone-accessories/…

In the data logs I see daily failed attempts, where pages are searched for via Computer and Mobile Phone directly in the main menu Hardware.

Main Menu senseful purified: Mobile Apps is a Submenu of Software

Please first select Software on my homepage. Only then select Mobile Apps, if you are looking for software for a mobile device like iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.
Thanks to the pull-down menu, this can be done quickly in one go using mouse or touchpad. If you don't like pop-up menus, you can also click on menu after menu.

That is why you can never find these apps directly under Software!
The correct path to the apps for smartphones is: tests‑and‑tips.info/en/?software/mobile-apps/…
I see daily in the logbook that people and bots are constantly looking for apps directly under /software/ and will never find them!
A glance at the table of contents will help to understand my uniform menu structure …

Keyword list: ASCII, Apps, Browser, Clean URL, Computer, Domain, Experience, HTTPS, Hardware, Homepage, IT, Mobile Apps, Mobile Phone, Mouse, Smartphones, Software, Structure, Tips, URL, Website, Who, iPhone, tests‑and‑tips.info, why
